Show the link between glycolysis and the citric acid cycle

Pyruvate oxidation (or the link reaction) is a vital step between glycolysis and the citric acid cycle.

This reaction and the citric acid cycle both happen in the mitochondrion and allow the extraction of much more energy from sugar than glycolysis alone. No ATP is made but it produces high energy molecules that are fed into the citric acid cycle and electron transport chain.

Shows how the massive enzyme complex pyruvate dehydrogenase (that is bigger than a ribosome!) carries out the steps of pyruvate oxidation.  The model also gives students an insight into protein structure.
