Teach the details of the Krebs cycle and link reaction with our model

The Krebs cycle (or citric acid cycle) extracts more energy from food molecules that have been through glycolysis. It is connected to glycolysis by the link reaction (pyruvate oxidation) and its products feed into the electron transport chain.

Perfect for use in class or for distance learning at home!

Your students first make models of atoms out of the colourful parts. They then use these to work through the link reaction and the Krebs cycle.

They will see how pyruvate is converted to acetyl coenzyme A through the link reaction and then follow acetyl coenzyme A into the Krebs cycle.

The 8 steps of the Krebs cycle are looked at in detail to show how as much energy as possible is extracted from acetyl coenzyme A. This energy is obtained in the form of electrons that are passed to high energy electron carriers such as NAD. The molecules are looked at in detail in each of the steps and it is shown how they are altered to produce the substrate for the next step. Finally oxaloacetate is regenerated for the next turn of the Krebs cycle.

A simpler model is also available. Click for details.
