Teach how the heart is controlled with our colourful model!
The sinoatrial (SA) node (or pacemaker) produces electrical pulses that stimulate the heart to contract. Next, the atrioventricular (AV) node sends signals through the bundle of His and into Purkinje fibres to stimulate the ventricles to contract.
The SA node is acted upon by our brain to increase or reduce the heart rate depending upon blood pressure, carbon dioxide and oxygen levels. It also responds to hormones such as epinephrine (adrenaline) and thyroxine.
Students first make their model of the heart out of the colourful parts. They then use it to look how signals are relayed from the SA node through the heart to cause it to beat.
Students will also learn about the waves on an electrocardiogram (P, Q, R, S and T), and what they show.
