They then use it to learn about gene cloning or genetic engineering by carrying out a restriction enzyme digest and adding an gene insert. This insert can represent either the insulin or green fluorescent protein (GFP) genes.
Your students learn about plasmid structure, use of vectors, marker genes, restriction enzymes recognition sites, sticky ends, multiple cloning site and promoters.
Takes about 20 minutes to make if divided between 5 groups of students. Can be kept intact and reused once assembled.
