Your students will gain an insight into how modern forensic scientists carry out DNA fingerprinting using polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
The target sequences are repeated sequences called short tandem repeats (STR, a type of variable number tandem repeat, VNTR). Scientists use them because they vary between people. By carrying out this hands-on activity, your students will gain a full understanding of DNA fingerprinting. They will also see how gender can be identified from a DNA fingerprint.
For use with 4 student groups.
Time required: 20 minutes.
