Your students will get to understand how plasmids are constructed and used in genetic engineering by building a model of one using colourful parts.
The plasmid model includes restriction enzyme sites, antibiotic resistance gene, promoter, origin of replication (ori), repressor and insert (GFP or human insulin).
With the model, your students will build each part, join them together in the correct order, digest the plasmid with two restriction enzymes and ligate an insert into the plasmid.
Complements practical activities such as bacterial transformation beautifully.
For use with 6 student groups.
Time required: 20 minutes.
Dimensions: 60 cm.
All components are reusable. Includes full instructions and class Powerpoint.
