Huntington's Disease is a incurable neurodegenerative condition that strikes people in middle age. It is inherited as a dominant genetic mutation from one or both parents.
A genetic test is available that predicts when the fatal condition will strike. The dilemma for people with the gene in their family is whether or not to take the test as there is no cure.
Your students will use electrophoresis to determine how likely 5 patients are to develop the condition. Using the banding pattern they must work out who will be affected and when it will arise. They can then discuss the ethical issues such a genetic test raises.
